Women Reframed

Curatorial Brief

The female is the emblem of commercialism, and most products are sold using the female body. And as women of advertising, we are told on a daily basis to illustrate and to create different stories involving women. We are told to "think outside the box", as the saying goes. But this all depends on the side of the box we're looking at.

We want to reframe and show the portrayal of women in advertising from a different perspective. From the wall, to the floor, to the sound, our exhibit is an overall sensorial experience. All pieces of art will be placed in a box, square, cube or square album representing women who feel "boxed" in stereotypes and other generalized views of gender.

Artist's Statement

When women are boxed in the eyes of advertisements, they look like worried moms or housewives, too-perfect-long-haired, demure Maria Claras or overly sexualized objects subjected through the male gaze.

This is an exhibition of the traditional treatment & stereotypical portrayal of women in advertising. Through our art, we aim to re-contextualize the way that women are portrayed in commercials that habitually objectify and fragment them merely to be objects or of no additional value.
